The Crimean Astrophysical
Observatory, situated at an altitude of 640 m (2,100 ft) in the Crimean Mountains near Partizanskoye,
Ukraine, specializes in solar and stellar spectroscopy. Its 260-cm (102-in) reflecting telescope (1960) is named for Grigory A. Shajn, a former director of the
observatory. Other telescopes at the site include a 125-cm (49-in) reflector, a 50-cm (20-in) Maksutov, a double 40-cm (16-in) astrograph, a 40-cm solar tower, and a Lyot coronograph. Facilities for conducting research in radio
astronomy and gamma-ray astronomy are also at the observatory.
