Cygnus the Swan is a
constellation located in the Northern Hemisphere. It is also known as the Northern
Cross because five of its brightest stars form a cross in the sky. At the foot of the cross is the bright double
star Albireo, which can be resolved with a small
telescope. The constellation also contains the North American Nebula and the Pelican Nebula, both very faint objects that can be seen only with a large telescope. The star 61 Cygni, at a
distance of 10.9 light years, was the first star to have its parallax measured (1838), providing the first accurate stellar distance.
