The cell is the basic unit of living matter that makes up the skin and all other organs of the human body that exists in
each of us. All are made of one or more units of microscopic independent life, when given a suitable environment. There are innumerable varieties of living cells. The simpler the cell is, such as the skin cell, the greater its regenerative power and the shorter its life span.Biochemical activity of tissue cells depends upon sub cellular structure of the individual cells. The three basic components of a typical cell are the nucleus, plasma membrane and the protoplasm. Cells lead independent lives and constantly communicate with each other. The body functions properly only because cells communicate with one another. The skin would not survive without such precise signaling in the cells, cells of the immune system instruct other cells to attack invaders and cells of the nervous system fire messages to and from the brain. Each day billion of cells in the human body kill themselves. Failure of cells to die can lead to problems like cancer. One of the reasons for cell death is to get rid of dangerous cells, those that could be harmful to the rest of the organism. Cells that are infected by a virus can sometimes recognize the infection and kill themselves before the virus has to replicate and spread to other cells.
The stratum conrneum is the outermost layer of the epidermis. The water holding capacity of the stratum conrneum provides balance to cellular health, depending upon the presence of certain lipids in precise association with cellular proteins. Ceramides constitute fifty percent of essential lipids in the stratum conrneum. In dry, traumatized, (acne, etc) post-operative and mature skin the amount of Ceramides is reduced as the skin ages. Application of Ceramides improves the skin’s water-holding capacity, expedites healing of traumatized skin and has a beneficial effect upon fine wrinkling.Keep in mind the cell requires four important elements to survive: nourishment, protection, function and proliferation. In 1954 Denham Harman, M.D., PhD., conceived the Free Radical Theory of Aging. The theory is based on the premises that the main cause of aging is an imbalance between production and elimination of free chemical radicals in body tissues. Solar-generated free radicals produce potentially harmful energy on and beneath the surface of the skin. Protection of the skin cells is mandatory and should never be approached as a beauty remedy. The sunlight can have harmful effects on human skin.
