Electricity from Microorganisms

Book Abstract by: Anthonyl1973

Original Author: Anthony Lawrence
The current dilemma of man is to save the remaining chemical/natural resources on earth from depletion so the scientists
had come up with an alternative to save the habitat of man. Microorganisms are ubiquitous. There are many forms of bacteria like Geobacter, Shewanella specially that are capable of electron transfer. Currently research is being carried out on these microbes for energy production. By genetic engineering these anaerobic microbes are made stable and used to tap energy from biomass leading to microbial fuel cell. This microbial fuel cell is used in a wastewater treatment, which simultaneously generates electricity, thus cutting the costs of the treatment and producing electricity. These fuel cells are also used in oil industry to tap oil from rocks and crevices increasing the percentage of oil production. Imagine this microbial fuel cell in a battery replacing the normal chemicals used in it like silica and carbon it will continuously produce energy. Thus making it a lifetime battery in the electronic devices. This reduces the cost as well as making it environmental friendly by reducing the hazard made by alkaline batteries. This invention will be useful in developing and industrialized nations making us independent on chemical resources, which are gradually depleting from Mother Nature. This will be giant leap to mankind as we will be able to use electronic devices without fear of ever drying up the chemicals required to activate them. Within 5 years this invention will revolutionize the electricity production and the electronic industry affecting the economy of the nations, which implement it.
