SERICULTURE- A PROMISING INDUSTRY
Sericulture is an agro-based rural industry where mainly silkworm - a biological machine- converts mulberry leaves into the silk, the Queen of textiles. The industry provides gainful employment to both skilled and unskilled labour. As all the family members irrespective of sex and age can contribute their might to the success of Sericulture work. Besides, sericulture is the only industry where money flows from rich to poor, as we know that silk is mainly consumed by the rich class and the value is distributed among the farmers, reelers, twisters, weavers and traders.
Sericulture involves four distinct phases of activity, viz., mulberry cultivation, silk rearing, reeling and weaving. As silk worms can be reared throughout the year in our country and also as the duration of rearing period is short, silkworm rearing assures substantial early returns to the farmer.
