Aloe Vera
Miracle Plant or Hoax?
The Aloe has been around our gardens for quite
some time,
but its sudden use as an ingredient in a wide spectrum of
products comes as a shock to me. I begin to wonder what's so
special about this plant that was lying in my garden for 10
years that I find its illustration on my razor's packaging
as well !
After doing some research on the plant I have come to a
conclusion that its medical properties is extremely high
compared to other plants, but due to its host of uses its
main properties have been over exaggerated at certain places.
Coming back to the plant, the most important component of
the plant is the gel that is present in its leaves. The
jelly like substance that comes out of its leaf contains
carbohydrate polymers such as glucomannans along with other
compounds. Another useful substance which is bitter yellow
exudate from the pericyclic tubules beneath the skin of the
leaves is commnly referred to as 'aloe juice'.
The Aloe plant is most effective for treatment of wounds,
minor burns, and skin irritation. Apart from a host of
external applications the aloe vera gel has equally
effective internal uses. It can be used for ulcers, cancers,
and common ailments like cough etc. The most effective use
would un doubtedly be for constipation. Aloe's side effects
include diarrhea and electrolyte imbalances, but hey guys
don't you get it, almost all medical drugs come with their
own side effects so I guess we can overlook these couple of
side effects.
I hope you'll must have got the whole idea, you see Aloe is
like a dice with many faces. Some sides are beneficial, but
if you try to harness its other faces you might be in
trouble, like say the other day I came across an
advertisement on the net saying that Aloe drugs can cure
AIDS. This is utter rubbish.
Today we live in a Commercially driven world, that's no
wonder why every damn product wants to cash on publicity.
Aloe is the victim of such publicity. It has been over used
by almost every company to sell its product. Making it more
difficult for us to make a choice.
Let's pray that we are not victimised by the false words.
