“There is a plenty of room at the bottom” said Richard P. Feynman, this I believe is an invitation for the scientist, or more appropriately biologist to explore the universe at the quantum level. But no, I am completely wrong, Nanotechnology is just not for scientist or biologist, but even for a qualified Mechanical engineer! Imagine building nano-tools and nano-gears, which operate under miniscule amount of energy that can be sent inside the veins of our body to clean up the clogged up Heart Arteries. This will bypass the Bypass surgery and Angioplasty, eliminating enormous pain and money! The Automobile industry is already working on the self-cleaning paints and glasses. Nanotechnology is the future and will open up various options not only in medical and nano-engineering but also in the Information Technology (IT) sector as well! Now you must be wondering how IT sector will benefit from Nanotechnology. Well, imagine scores of these minute machines scurrying under the veins in your body, you would obviously want them to be managed in the proper way, do what is expected out of them and then drain them out of the body when mission is accomplished. This will require lots of complex programming, programming which will control the behaviors of these independent minute machines, guiding them, issuing discrete instructions to achieve their objective. You would also need backup mechanisms, simulation programs, etc. Soon the time will come when IT majors will be releasing nano-softwares which will be compatible with the scores of the “nano-Hardware”. Then there will be bugs, and fixes/patches for those bugs. There will be viruses and anti-virus. The IT will continue at the expense of the Nanotechnology. But for the common man and woman alike, things would have changed, changed for good and there will be plenty of room still left at the bottom!!!
