The experiment was condusted to study the water efficiency and soil moisture change rule in separated level trench
in 2001~2003.The result showed:no matter the year rain abundant or deficient, there was an increase of water in 0~200cm soil layer in separated level trensh and resulted an increase of 92.0mm rain in maize field, and 132.1mm in potato field;soil water of the level trench increased 50.1mm in rain abundant year than in rain average and dry years; In comparison with the slope farming, there was an increase of 50.4mm of water in 0~200cm soil Layer with an increase rates of 1.53% for soil moisture. In year of uneven rain distribution,unregular change of soil moisture levels was observed.In comparision with the slope farming,an decrease of 18.6mm of water in 0~200cm soil layer in seedtime for serious spring-dry in less rain year; In comparision with less rain year, a decreasing rate of 3.4%~4.5% in 0~200cm soil moisture of level trench maize field for serious summer-dry in rain abundant and average year and an decrdase rate of 2.99%~3.25% in potato field. After harvest whole corn stalk mulching to separated level trench could reduce soil water disappear and alleriate the spring-dry.To determine before soil freezing and seedtime, an increase rate of 2.11% and 1.19% in level trench in mulched field compared with unmulched field. During in experiment 2001~2003 farming an increase rate of 100.2% of maize yieid per unit area and increase of 9.3kg/mm·hm~2 compared with slop.
