Field microplot, runoff plot and ̄(15)N tracer technique were utilized to study the soilnitrogen uptake by crops, nitrogen leaching and loss along with runoff from the eroded drylandin the hilly region on the Loess Plateau. The results showed that amounts of nitrgen uptake bymillet and soybean account for 19. 27%and 31.25% of the applied fertilizer N respectively,57.6%and 79.57%of the total N uptake by millet and sogbean from fertilizer are combined intocrop seeds seperately. The residual amount of fertilizer N in soil acount for 2.37%to 3.02% ofthe applied N after crops harveste. The depth of N leaching was 80~100cm in the profile of mil-let field, which could hardly lead to N-leaching loss;whereas the nitrogen moved downwards toa depth of more than 120cm in the bared land or the soybean field, which might cause N leaching loss.N loss from millet and soybean field were 17.37kg/hm ̄2 and 12.73 kg/hm ̄2 repectively, which were 86.63%and 89.48%less than those from the bared land. All of the enrichment ra-tio(E_R)of nitrogen in the sediment in the soil studied was over 1.0.Attention should be paid toN fertiligation, rational rotation and interplantion on the ereded dryland to utilize residual N to-tally,reduce N leaching loss and to stengthen the crop roles to conserve soil and water and reducenutrient loss.
