Based on the data from the field fixed position tests, this paper analysesthe effects of subsoiling,no-till,and mini-till
upon crop production, soil moisture.hard-ness and root system development in the semiarid region with high altitude in NorthwestHebei Province. Research rcsults showed that subsoiling and notill with stubbles lefthad the ecfect upon promoting soil water storage during crop growth and development, increasing soil freezing and thawing and moisture collection and reducing evaporationlosses during the non-growing and non-developing stages, In comparison with the tradi-tional tillage, soil water in 0~20cm-deep layer was increased by 4.4~9. 8mm in thesowing stage of spring wheat. But notill for ydars in succession increased soil hardnessas well as the percentage of crop root system in the corresponding surface soil layer. Ev-ery other subsoiling maintained the similar soil hardness to that by the traditional tillagebut increased crop root system by 3.4%~11.4%under 20cm─deep soil layer as againstthe traditional tillage. The fixed position tests also indicated that subsoiling, notill andmini-till technologies with stubbles Ieft adopted in meadow chestnut soil made springwheat yields reach 88.7%~96.3% by the traditional tillage, but tillage cost was greatlyreduced, and soil fertility was improved.
