The growth enhancement of intercropped fababean and wheat has been studied via pot experiment with
root barriers and rhizobia
inoculation. The results showed that wheat growth was enhanced without root barrier, leading to higher biomass and N acquisition than those with both solid barrier and mesh barrier.Fababean growths were not affected by
root barriers with NM353 and LN732
inoculation but were with LN566 and without inoculation.Inoculation did improve the growth of fababean with solid barrier, and the effect of NM353 was the best not only with solid barrier and mesh barrier but also without barrier. The growth of wheat without barrier was improved by inoculating NM353,which leading to higher biomass and N acquisition.LN566 enhanced fababean growth with solid barrier but not without barrier. The growth of fababean in this case was suppressed which resulted in lower biomass and lower N acquisition. Therefore, the inoculation effects in intercrpping differed in rhizobium strains;the possible way existed in selecting appropriate rhizobium strains for intercropping that would improve N nutrition of both cereal and legumes.
