In accordance with the character of poor nitrogen and phosphorus in soils in semiarid cold region with high elevation in
northwest Hebei, the experiments of soil
fertility improvement with organic and mineral fertilizers were conducted on meadow chestnut soil in drought shoaly land from 1992 to 1994. The results showed that complex application of organic and mineral fertilizers could increase the soil total humus, raise the content of HA and FA and the E4/E6 value of HA molecular, increase soil enzyme activity, obviously improve the nutrition status, promote the formation of miroaggregate which was larger than 0.05 mm, raise the degree of aggregation and the structural index of soil, and improve the soil physical, chemical and biological characters. The naked oats yield increased by 53.2 to 80.6 percent when complex applying organic and mineral fertilizers. The
precipitation use efficiency increased from 2.69 kg/(hm 2·mm) of non fertilizer treatment to 4 .10 kg/(hm 2·mm)~4.83 kg/(hm 2·mm). The complex application of organic and mineral fertilizers was an effective method for full crop yield increase and precipitation use efficiency.
