In the plot experiment on runoff, the loss of water, soil and fertilizer and the characteristics of contour terrace, grass wasteland and eroded soil were studied. The results showed that their runoff range in the order: eroded soil>grass wasteland>contour terrace, but soil loss in the order: eroded soil >contour terrace>grass wasteland at different seasons; total and available nutrient loss of contour terrace in creased by 50.10% and 103.00% over grass wasteland, but decreased by 34.5% and 14.2% as comparison with eroded soil, respectively; nutrient in the sediment was richer than that in soil , the nutrient enrichment ratio was in the order: available P > available K >available N >total N> O. M, and eroded soil> grass wasteland > contour terrace. So, building contour terrace with the soil erosion modelus of 550~650 T/(km 2·a) , which is much smaller than permitted, without causing notablely man-made Erosion acceleration, is a effective measure of the utilization of red soil for sustainable development in hilly region.
