In order to explore the measures of promoting the growth of Vetiver grass and to speed up the popularization of biological methods to control erosion, with the support of the University of Hong Kong, a fertilizer trial of Vetiver grass for erosioncontrol was conducted since 1995. The results indicated that, on farmland. applying fertilizer to Vetiver grass showed no obvious effect. If we must apply some fertilizer to Vetiver in order to multiply seedlings, we had better use fertilizer as after manure. On infertile sloping land (bare land), the application of fertilizer had a distinct effect upon Vetiver grass, and the organic manure applied together with some chemical fertilizer was the best among all treaments. The lack of phosphorus fertilizerseriously disturbed the growth of Vetiver grass. Applying chemical fertilizer with split application was obviously better thanthat applying the whole quantity at transplanting. The results also indicated, on infertile sloping land, applying fertilizer promoted the formation of Vetiver hedgerows and, therefore, had obvious effect on erosion control.
