Seeds are the most important part in raising any type of crop. There are four different
classes of quality seeds. Breeder sees, Foundation seed,
Registered seed and Certified seed. 1) Breeder seed : This class of seed is directly controlled by the originating or sponsoring plant breeder of the breeding programme or situation. This lot of seeds is having the highest genetic and physical purity standards . this forms the basis or source for all other classes of seeds . However , the number of seeds will be very limited. 2) Foundation seed: This class of seed is the progeny of breeder seed which is so handled to maintain the particular genetic purity and identity. It is the primary source of seed of a genetically identified variety from which all further increases are made. 3) Registered seed : progeny of breeder or foundation seed. this is produced by the registered seed growers under the technical supervision of the Breeder or the research experts. They are handled under procedures acceptable to the
certification agency to maintain satisfactory genetic purity and identity. 4) Certified seed: This is the progeny of breeder's seed , foundation seed or registered seed. This is so handled to maintain satisfactory genetic purity and identity acceptable to a certification agency. It also refers to the seed that fulfils all requirements for certification provided by the Seed Act and Rules.
