The
day began with a lick and a promise and I was ready waiting in the wings to meet the Professor of
Applied Mathematics at Southampton University when I spied a rather
small man about the same size as myself standing the the shadows of a big office at the University now knocked down or refurnished or currently "not there". I didnt fall back on the usual polite pleasant remarks but got up and had the "handshake" practised even though I am a lady and not supposed to take the initiative away from the gentlemen.
However, after about ten minutes the Professor of Applied Mathematics turned up wearing a rather modern shirt and trousers quite becoming to his position at the University. His secretary then proceeded to introduce the Professor of Applied Mathematics to me ... I got on with the introductions and then they invited me to dinner at the Staff Only Canteen.
Had I done the right thing ......... did I pass the test ......... was it purely a Diplomatic exercise ... I never did find out but I must admit I never forgot the day I met the
Professor of Applied Mathematics at the University of Southampton ....... well! probably as the small man was also a Professor of Social Statistics and I saw him again at the Staff Canteen .... great blogging ..
