ASTRONOMY AND COSMOLOGY
Astronomy and Cosmology are interesting and useful subjects. The Jaina school existed in India around sixth century B.C. and later on. Mathematics was developed by the Jainas at that time, as per the ancient Jaina literature. This has four parts. The ancient Indian scholars worked on these topics, with the mathematical approach. The book has nine Chapters mainly covering concepts about Cosmology, Astronomy, Kinematics, theories, technical terms, source material, three brief bibliographies of the source material, research articles and related books and also abbreviations etc. One of the Chapters discusses about the concepts of Cosmology. The writer starts the discussion with evaluation of Rajju for measuring vast distances of the universe. Several values of Rajju have been worked out. This is followed by calculation for the volume of Universe. It also mentions about three types of layers of air and water vapour, all around the universe. Then there is discussion about the movements of matter and soul from one point to another in universe, along with the quickest approach with least time. This Jaina literature depicts measures for astronomical events, and also karmic phenomena. Concepts of Palya, Sayara and Kalpa are then covered in detail, followed by providing comparability for the cycles. The book provides adequate information about ancient systems and other allied systems. The book will make the people aware of the ancient scholars to the development of these subjects. This book is a useful reference book for any similar work in future.
