STRENGTHENING OF THE CHURCH BUILDING AGAINST ACTIONS OF AN INTENSIVE CURVATURE OF MINING AREAS

Article Summary   by:toffi_75     Original Authors: Marian Kawulok; Krzysztof Sobik
ª

The
church building in the city of Bytom-Miechowice used to be subjected to the
influences of mining activity. For many years building works have been
conducted in the church in order to remove negative effects of the mining
exploitation. Within the undertaken protection, the building was strengthened
against the horizontal ground movements. The effects of latest exploitation as
well as a risk of negative influence of the subsequent exploitations have
revealed a necessity of additional strengthening of the structure. It has been
proposed to establish a stiff plane in the upper level of the internal columns
of the church. The primary aim of the bracing is to prevent against mutual
horizontal replacement of the arch coussinets. The elements of this protection
allow for taking over the additional forces which result from vertical ground
movements.
