In 15th century AD, W hen Columbus, in a ship, went in search of a new landscape and continents; his followers feared that
they might fall into depth, as they believed that earth was not round. But there was no such superstition among Indians on the size and shape of the earth. In Vedas, itihasas and purnas, the common use of earth as BHOOGOLA i.e. earth as
spherical. Aryabhatta in 499 A.D, 1000 years before Columbus and modern scientist declared earth as round. I am giving you the original word in Sanskrit mentioned in Aryabhateeyam 4-6 as:$0“mrujjalasikhivayumayobhoogola sarvatho vruttha” meaning spherical earth made of soil, water, fire and air is circular (when viewed) from all sides i.e. spherical in shape.$0Aryabhataa and others have not only mentioned that earth is spherical in shape but also given the diameter of the earth correctly. Aryabhatta used the unit of measurement as yojana. Modern measurement of yojana can be obtained by calculations.yojana is equivalent to 8000 times the average height of the man (nara=Nr). Using yojana Aryabhatta has given the diameter of the earth.$0Original Sanskrit word “nrushiyojanam, njilaa bhoovyaaso” Meaning 8000Nr unit is equal to one yojana. The diameter of the earth is 1050 yojana. It has been estimated that one yojana can be approximately 12.11km.Thus diameter of the earth in kilometers is 1050 X12.11KM Which is equal to 12716km which is very near to the correct value of earth’s diameter i.e. 12756 km$0
