The Times of India

Book Abstract by: sreeram

Original Author: Anita Rao Kashi
CAN WE SETTLE IN MARS ?
Tired of living on earth? How about checking out Mars.
The idea is quite plausible says
space scientists U R Rao “ With six billion people and counting , Earth is very crowded .Optimistic estimates put the population at 12 billion by 2050. Its time we moved, Rao told a press conference.. Colonising the apparently hostile Red Planet is seemingly simple: Begin by installing 100 sq km of plastic sheets coated with reflection material which will catch the Sun’s rays and melt the ice; I ntroduce bacteria and then hardy plants to begin the process of photosynthesis. Once this is done, green house effect will kick in. This is the process earth went through, naturally, it took millions of years. But humans can accelerate the process according the space scientist. He also mooted this idea at the recent Humanity 3000 symposium organized in Seattle by U.S based Walter Kistler Foundation for the future. Twenty space scientists agreed that it was probably inevitable
Mars is having half the gravity of earth and 1/1000 th earth’s atmosphere as much as land surface as earth though it is 3 times smaller. Plenty of water but as Ice.
The genesis of the idea of colonizing Mars was in the fact that there was no plan B if a catastrophe hits earth, making it inhabitable.
Rao’s ideas may seem lika a fantasy but it is not wacky. It is not something to achieve next year but say in about 1000 years. By then we can think of new materials discovered and new modes of travel which can drastically curtail the traveling time to Mars making it more habitable.
Mars is having t is 6794 km diameter, mass 0.11 compared to earth, Volume 0. 15 about 1/7 th that of earth, Density 3 as compared to water (1). It is 227,900,000 km away from the Sun orbits the Sun in 687 days, spins on axis in 24 hours and 37 minutes and the average temperature is – 230 C. It has 2 moons . It is closest to earth after Venus.
