BIODIVERSITY AND ITS COSERVATION WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO ENDAGERED FAUNA OF NORTH EAST INDIA
ABSTRACT
Biodiversity or biological diversity refers to the variety of life on earth. This diversity of living creatures form a support system which has been used by each civilization for its growth and development. Biological diversity deals with the degree of Nature’s variety in biosphere. This variety can be observed at three levels- the genetic variability within a species; the variety of species within a community and the organization of species in an area into distinctive plants and animal communities. Approximately 1.4 million of plants and animals have been identified but scientists believed that between ten to eighty million species actually exist in Nature. Species are disappearing rapidly and it therefore is common need to conserve all these biological diversity.
North East India is one of the most important hotspots amongst the twenty-five biodiversity hotspots with a rich faunal diversity. Up till now, more than one thousand vertebrates and nearly six thousand invertebrate species are recorded in North East India. Also a large number of wild animals are going to be
endangered in this region due to several reasons, for which there is an urgent need to protect and conserve the species for future well being of mankind and also keeping the environment virgin. This paper aims to focus certain endangered fauna of this region and also some measures to be taken for its conservation.
