Present study is an attempt to evaluate the difference in rate of sulphur dioxide absorption by deciduous and
evergreen plants, under elevated concentration of the gas in ambient air. For the purpose, Ficus religiosa
was selected as the deciduous and Carica papaya
as the evergreen plant. Two way ANOVA for sulphur dioxide in air and sulphate accumulation in both the selected plants, showed significant difference among the sites, among the months as well as interaction effect of both site and months. The linear correlation coefficient among ambient air sulphur dioxide and sulphate in leaves was significant at 1% level in case of deciduous plant; however, the same was either nonsignificant or significant at 5% level of significance in evergreen plants, in most of the sites. APTI (Air Pollution Tolerance Index) of F. religiosa
and C. papaya
was found to be 19.73 and 81.10 respectively. Finally, the deciduous plants were suggested as pollution indicators whereas the evergreen plants were recommended for the air pollution control.
