   Chlorella-as food and medicine.

Chlorella is a single-celled fresh water  green alga spherical in shape, about 2 to 10 mm in diameter, and is without cilia. Chlorella contains the green photosynthetic pigments chlorophyll-a and –b.Chlorella contains about 50% protein (on dry weight basis)and 20% each of carbohydrates and fats and 8-10 % ash.The protein of Chlorella contains all the aminoacids which are essential for nutrition of human beings and animals .Hence  this green alga was studied intensively during world war II, when the need for  greater supplies of food arose. As Chlorella can convert carbon dioxide in to oxygen,it serves as a source of  food as well as oxygen. So a Chlorella culturing tank is considered to be of much use to the astronauts as a source of food and oxygen in their space journeys.Industries are operating  in Japan ,U.S.A Europe and Asia for supply of Chlorella products.
Green algae are the highest sources of chlorophyll; Chlorella is the highest, often ranging from 3 to 5% chlorophyll. Chlorella supplements helps cleansing of the bowel, bloodstream and liver. In addition, it speeds up the healing of any damaged tissue. Chlorella lowers blood cholesterol and triglycerides as well.
Experiments have shown that chlorella tends to normalize blood sugar. Proper levels of blood sugar are necessary for normal brain function, heart function and energy metabolism, all of which are essential for maintaining good health. The liver and pancreas regulates blood sugar in the body. So, chlorella supports and controls blood sugar. Beta Carotene and vitamin-C present in Chlorella blocks the free radicals, which may damage the cells.
Research at the Kitazato Institute indicated that chemical substances in chlorella stimulated the production of interferon, a chemical natural to the body, which protects cells against viruses and which is believed to slow the growth rate of cancer cells.
On the whole to summarize, consumption of Chlorella products, which are available in the market contributes to a strong natural defense system for the mankind. and it greatly increases healthy digestion and looks after the maintenance of digestive track
