Changes in the serum protein profile of the Indian edible oyster, Crassostrea madrasensis (Preston)
Abstract
The serum protein profile of the Indian edible oyster, Crassostrea madrasensis was
studied under different stress conditions such as in presence of an organophosphorus pesticide, Nuvan, a heavy metal, copper and against a bacterial pathogen, Vibrio alginolyticus. The study was intended to understand the stress proteins and their changes in response to different stress conditions in C. madrasensis. The study revealed that the intensity of proteins of molecular weights 86, 74, 26 and 31 kDa were higher in animals subjected to stress. Thus it may be presumed that they play an important role in stress amelioration and their intensity may be used as an indicator for stress in C. madrasensis. It was also revealed that many of the minor proteins are either absent of feebly present under stressed condition.
