Latest study carried out by scientists from Stanford University Medical Centre and published in the biotechnology
magazine “Cell” has proved that
aging is not a natural phenomenon as is conventionally believed. Researchers are of the opinion that there is a development drift that leads to this process, and it may be possible to stop this drift. They firmly believe in this because, according to them, there are animals that do not age. To substantiate their arguments, researchers cited the example of tortoises that lay eggs even when they are 100 years old, and whales known to be 200 years old. According to these scientists animals such as tortoises, and whales, and many such animals have same proteins, fats, and DNA. Therefore, it follows that if they do not age, nor should humans.
Whatever the ultimate outcome, what will happen to the population if all of us go on to live for years, and years? Will there be adequate land on earth to grow as much food, and will there be adequate jobs? Or will we choose to forego the pleasure of having children and their innocence? Or will we have physical and or financial criteria for putting the elders to sleep the way do our pets (Logan's Run)? Is that really a more human approach? Are investigations in this direction really worth it or necessary?
