According to habitats, plants can be placed under two major groups:-
Land or terrestrial plants.
Water or aquatic
plants
Plants which grow on land are called ` lands plants’ or ` terrestrial plants’ approximately, one- third of the earth’s surface is land. This land surface is not same everywhere. There are different landforms like deserts, plans, hills and mountains. The characteristic features of plant depend on the type landform and climate conditions of the region.
Territorial plants of group
Plants in plains
Plants on hills and mountains
Plants in deserts plants in costal areas
Plants in marshes
Plants in forests
Plants in grasslands
A wide variety of plants grows in the plains. Generally, the trees growing in the plains have branches and leaves. They are adapted to with stand the climatic conditions of the plains. They can survive in moderately cold as well as hot months. However, they shed most of their leaves in autumn. Some common plants growing in the plains are neem, mango, Peepal, Gulmohar, Sheesham, Amlatas and banyan.
Mountainous and hilly regions are very cold. Most often, there is snowfall as well. The trees growing in this region are adapted to withstand cold conditions. They are usually tall, straight and conical in shape. Their conical shape helps them to slide snow easily off their branches. These trees are usually flowerless and have cones with seeds inside them. This is why; they are also called ` conifers’. The leaves are needle-like and have a waxy coating to protect them from snow. Pine, cedar, fir, spruce, deodar, maple, Oak, birch, beech, etc. are some examples of coniferous trees. Coniferous trees are mostly evergreen I.e.; they retain their leaves all year round.
Water is very scarce in the deserts. Hence, only those plants which need very little water can survive here, cactus, keekar, date palm, etc. are some plants that grow in desserts.
Deserts plants have some characteristics that help them to withstand with harsh conditions of the desert. They either do not have any leaves or have very few of them. This is to minimize the loss of water. Some of the desert plants carry out the process of food- making by their green stems. The stems of such plants are fleshy and have thorns. Water is stored in these fleshy stems. Plants such as coconut grow in the coastal areas because they need plenty of water rich in salt to survive. The seeds of coastal plants are usually dispersed by water.
