Future Organs

Article Abstract by: RohitS

Original Author: Rohit S
Want to become the “Super-Man”? The day is not far-off when we may all be super-beings!!
Think on it – arteries with
no cholesterol deposition, a heart that is programmed to repair itself. Will we plug chips into our brains? Or make the appendix functional – we may eat grass again!
Impossible! Perhaps not. Creation of an entire organ, and even an entire creature, no longer sounds like science fiction.
According to British Telecommunications Research Laboratories, the scientists will have developed artificial lungs by 2010. Dr. Evan Snyder, a neuroscientist at Harvard Medical School, Boston is working on brain stem cell which can be harnessed to repair and recreate brain cells. World expects an artificial human brain by 2020. Already Colin McGuckin has grown world’s first artificial liver.
So what is next? Instead of just mending fractures in bone, scientists are trying to coax the body to grow bone and cartilages on biodegradable scaffolds infused with mix of stem cells and growth factors. Hearing implants are being perfected that can be adjusted to pickup a wider range of frequencies at longer distances.
Ah...Wish to be young forever? With advances in Cosmetic surgery, the dream of having eternal youth free of skin diseases is possible. Instead of sheets of skin grown in lab from human and synthetic-polymer matrix, we look forward to a future where skin is grown by the body from precursor cells and growth factors.
It won’t be long before humans will start manufacturing improved organs to replace infected or dead organs. One day we shall be at the pinnacle of the living world – the most advanced and magnificently burnished product.
