Screening of seaweeds for hemagglutinins from the coast of Goa
Abstract:- A hemagglutinins isolated from algal crude extract, extracted by three different procedures Phosphate buffered saline, Tris buffered saline and sodium Chlride (0.85%) from eighteen macro algae were examined for the agglutinate human erythrocytes A+, B+ and O+. Most of the crude extract extracted by all three procedures agglutinated human erythrocytes tested, but none of the algal crude extracts were blood group specific. Nine species were further selected for partial purification using Ammonium sulphate precipitation and products obtained was checked for hemagglutination titer assay using micro-titer plate and blood group specificity. Out of nine species Ulva fasciata, Caulerpa serulateoides, Dictota dichotoma and Padina tetrastomatica showed good titer activity ranging from 1:2 to 1:16. These data suggest that crude as well as partially purified extract from marine macro algae have high hemagglutination activity that may be useful for clinical as well as immunological research.
