Crystal Structure and Definition

Article Summary   by:tanty     Original Author: artikelkimia.info
ª

Crystal are solid composed of atoms, ions,or molecules arranged to occur specific positions.

The center of each crystal is called a lattice point. The lattice point of a crystal are arranged in a repeating, geometric pattern to form the crystal structure. The bonds between the atoms or molecules of a crystal may be ionic, covalent, hydrogen, or a combination of these and other forces. In addition to describing crystals by their bond type, scientist characterized crystal according to their hardness, melting point, heat conduction, and conduction of electricity.

The basic repeating unit of crystals is a collection of geometrically arranged atoms, ions, or molecules called the unit cell. The size and shape of the unit cell depends on the size and shape of the atoms, ions, or molecules and how they readily pack together. Unit cell occur in only seven shapes-simple cubic, tetragonal, orthorhombic, rhomobohedral, monoclinic, triclinic, and hexagonal.
