THE
EARTH SPEAKS OUT
Have you ever heard of the big bang? Well, according to some of you called scientists, this is how I, the earth have been created. A particular species known as the Homo sapiens has been mainly responsible for my development (and maybe even future destruction). When this species first appeared, we lived in perfect harmony with each other. I provided them with resources for their food and shelter and in return, they kept me protected. I felt so lucky among the other planets to have such a caring population, looking after me. How could I know then that the Homo sapiens would evolve so much and also cause me to change with them? To tell you the truth, these human
beings do have a high reproduction rate! Presently there are six billion people living on me and the population is estimated to rise to ten billion by 2040. As the population increases, it becomes more difficult for me to satisfy their demands. After all, I have got my limits too! Then, these human beings have made quite rapid technological advances and this has culminated in the Industrial Revolution. With this Industrial Revolution, humans began in earnest to change the nature of my atmosphere and quality of my water. I have provided them with so many fuels to produce
energy. But these people have not used them properly and now they are worried about exhaustion. Each year, they burn so much of my fossil fuels and destroy so many of my forests. No wonder I am angry and punish them with droughts, floods and cyclones. They have warmed up my atmosphere so much that this has resulted in the
greenhouse effect. Now they consider global warming, one of the consequences of greenhouse effect, as the ‘Mother of all environmental scares’. They should be worried anyway because if this continues, I will see to it that the polar ice caps melt, raising the sea levels and submerging some of them. It is not only me that they do not respect but they cannot live in harmony even among themselves. Some of the human beings believe that they are superior to the others due to their race or gender. They do not even know how to live in peace, fighting for absurd things like power. Poor me who had to put up with so many of their wars and all the bombs and chemicals with which they have disfigured me! I still dream of the old days when there was no such thing as terrorism. I have provided them with so much food and resources. Yet so many of them suffer from
poverty and starvation. In fact about 5 to 20 million of humans die of hunger each year. They believe that my food supplies are becoming scarcer. If only they realized that it is their fault and they do not know how to distribute my resources properly. If human beings continue their bad habits, they sure will suffer more from pollution, inequality and the vagaries of the weather. Many species would be on the verge of extinction and even their species would be threatened. But then, I am sure they will find ways to save their species. One thing that I have always admired is their intelligence. They have made such ingenious inventions, look at the machine they call computer for instance. The ‘Seven Wonders of the World’, among others, are their own works of art and architecture. So if they change their mentality and use their education rightly, I will sure protect them. Long live the earth!
