Jakarta is the second largest city in Asia are most vulnerable to climate change. It can not be separated from the polluted air that was so severe Jakarta.
So says Ubaidillah, Director of Forum for the Environment in Jakarta. But the polluted air is not the only factor, said Ubaidillah. The number reached nearly ten million vehicles this year. Plus the lack of reforestation or afforestation. Also an open space in Jakarta is very minimal.
Nine percent
This
is due to the transfer function of the empty spaces are turned into
concrete-storey concrete and into commercial centers such as malls,
homes of the elite and other entertainment facilities. It all becomes a factor why Jakarta is very vulnerable to climate change.
This applies to the whole of the capital, said Director of Walhi Jakarta, Ubaidillah.
"Jakarta
is, that with an area of approximately 6,500 square meters, almost
all of its territory is no empty area. Only 9 percent are still open
lands. 9 percent were located in areas south of Jakarta."
But in general, Jakarta has been very full of the population, vehicles and concrete that has been such a rise. This should be addressed through government policies that could encourage minimize these impacts, Ubaidillah said.
While
for the other major cities in Indonesia are still in the stage of
damage to the environment, but not as severe as in Jakarta.
"Other
areas such as Bandung, Surabaya, Medan, Makassar, it is also prone
areas. It seems likely that these areas could also be the same as in
Jakarta. There is now a worry."
The worst scenario
Jakarta
is definitely going to have a big flood, coupled with the uncertain
climate at this time, in 2010, and even 2012, 80 percent of the capital
could be under water.
This is not only due to rain water which can not be absorbed by the soil, because soil is to be all concrete. In addition, water can not enter the time wasted to the sea. While the sea experiencing the tide of climate change.
"Again,
due to climate change is the potential of sea water into the ground,
which is also known to rob flooding. So this will be the Jakarta floods
caused by rain, and will also be affected by the floods caused by
overflowing water. It was very scary."
Uncertain
At present, first, climate change is uncertain. The dry season and still hit Jakarta rain once a week or twice a week. Uncertainty of climate change such as this are felt at the impact of climate change.
Walhi Jakarta recommends that the government dared to do an audit of development, in the event of violation of rules. Violators should be prosecuted. Not only developers but also licensing.
Jakarta, in accordance with Law 26/2007 on spatial planning, 30 percent of the capital region is an open area. But currently only 9 percent open area.
"This
is not ideal at all. We always recommend this stop now, no further
development takes an empty area. If you can bare soil areas that had
already purchased the developer, if the government would immediately be
taken over again or purchased again by the government."
Flood channel
Secondly, the government should immediately improve the channels of water or drainage, and many times in this chaotic city. Flood channel which is currently under construction should also be accelerated. Because it is still not finished. While the rainy season coming soon.
"At least late December and early January our predictions, Jakarta will experience a major flood again the annual season."
