Waste generated from human activities will pose a hazard to the environmentif it is not properly managed. Open dumping continues to be practiced in mostdeveloping countries since it is the least expensive method. A study was conductedto investigate and evaluate the dump site at Mukim Tebing Tinggi, Kota Bharu,Kelantan. Field observation, public survey and water quality sampling wereconducted to determine the suitability of the waste disposal site at Mukim TebingTinggi, Kota Bharu by taking into account of the siting criteria and environmentalconcerns. The classification systems of waste dump site were adopted from GeneralLandfill Categories from United Nation Environment Programme and InternationalGuidelines for Landfill Evaluation from International Solid Waste Association. Theresults of water quality were then compared to typical leachate quality to determinewhether the water has been polluted by leachate. The dump site is categorized as anopen dump which offered no protection to the surrounding environment. MPKBopen dump site is likely to pollute the environment by the migration of leachate tothe surrounding areas, deterioration of air quality, and high propagation of pests andvectors that may harmful to the human. Besides, results from the analysis of thewater samples shown that the water surrounding the site has been polluted. Thereforesome mitigation measure should be done on the site in the future to reduce thenegative impact or by shifting to a more suitable location.
