A new procedure for the design of composite columns with uniaxial bending proposed by Basu and Sommerville'' has been incorporated
in the draft revision of BS 449a and the draftunified bridge code.3 The procedure is based on results obtained by an analytical method for computing ultimate failure loads of composite columns under uniaxial eccentricities. This analytical method was first proposed by Bondalewho extended the von Karman procedure for ,~ obtaining the inelastic buckling load of metal columns to eccentrically loaded concrete encased steel columns.
