Science contributed a lot to the comforts of man. Man used science and technology for making life easy and enjoyable.
Today we see that the distance which was covered in years can be covered in a few hours. Man has come a long way from bullock-carts to jet aeroplanes and rockets. Man can reach the other parts of the world, say USA in a few hours. There are-non stop flights from one country to the other thousands of kilometers away.
It was a landmark in the history of development of science when Neil Armstrong set his foot on the surface of moon in July, 1969. The moon was considered a god in ancient times.
In electricity and electronics man has made tremendous progress. Electricity is used for all types of comforts right from lighting a bulb, heater for cooking, washing machine for washing clothes, fans and air-conditioners and many other things. We can listen to music from radio and stereo, see programs on education and entertainment on TV, we can watch a match being played in London or USA on the TV while sitting in our room. We can talk to our relative in other city or country on telephone. This is all due to the contribution of science.
Population in many countries is increasing very rapidly. In our country, the population now is around 85,00,00,00 while at the time of independence; undivided India had only
40, 00, 00,000. Though population has increased manifold in our country, we have become self-sufficient in food grains due to the blessings of science. You perhaps know about green revolution. Due to this we are now in a position to survive successive droughts. Earlier our country faced lots of difficulties. Science has contributed a lot to reach this stage. We have fertilizers for more yield, superior quality seeds, and medicines for saving the crops from insects and pests all due to science.
Now we are progressing towards white revolution and second green revolution. We are increasing production of milk, butter, cheese, etc. science helps in developing superior quality of buffaloes and cows which give more milk.
Science contributed so much to improve the health of man and save him from deadly diseases that it is difficult to even imagine. Now heart transplant, bypass surgery etc. have become common which were even difficult to imagine just a few decades ago. Now we hear about test tube babies. Science has made possible to treat deadly diseases like tuberculosis, polio, paralysis, cholera, malaria etc. science has been made possible to treat cancer to some extent.
