In January 2006 part of the
assembly bay fell down. The article shows the reasons of this
collapse. The
assembly
bay had been used since 60’s with a few year breaks, which exerted
some influence on the steel supporting structure. The main reason of the
collapse was the failure of the bottom chord of the steel truss which occurred
due to the defect of the field joint. The roof was overloaded by the layer of
heavy snow, which was twice bigger than the building standard for the snow
load. The building was under threat of the structural failure immediately after
it started to be used in the past.
