The paper is dedicated
to the
breakdown of the steel
structure in one of the warehouse buildings in
the distribution
center, that had place on 21st of January, 2006. An area of the
described building is about 9200 m2. The main
structure of the building, in the
neighborhood of the failure, comprises the set of steel truss roof purlins and
truss-girders supported on the reinforced-concrete pillars. At the beginning of
the 3rd decade of January one of the main roof truss-girders suddenly collapsed
after the destruction of one of the joints, located in the level of the upper
chord that resulted in significant bowing deflection of the roof-truss and
visible horizontal displacement of supporting column. The sudden deformations
and changes of the shape of the main roof structure caused the failure of the
other constructional elements in the nearby area, as truss purlins, bracing
system and trapezoidal roof sheeting. After some technical analyses led to find
out the reasons of the structure
breakdown, many designing mistakes and
disadvantages were proved.
