STEEL COMBINED WALL FAILURE DURING CONSTRUCTION OF QUAY WALL – REASONS OF FAILURE AND REPAIR METHODS

Article Abstract by: toffi_75

Original Author: Paweł Kwarciński
Article describes a failure of new
build 3.5 km long quay wall in United States. Part of the quay is constructed
with anchored HZ/AZ steel combined wall. During backfilling and dredging works
around combined wall a 1.20 meter horizontal deflections of HZ/AZ wall has
appeared. Also the anchorage system was displaced. That deflections happened
only on 35 m long part of quay wall in place were waters from small river were
earlier falling into the sea. The studies after failure showed lacks in ground
investigations in place of failure. Only 6 bore holes made on 3.5 km long quay
wall(!). So lack of the data in design stage was main reason of failure.
Article describes actions undertaken after failure in order to repair wall.
