In the paper there are presented
questions connected with
analysis and
reparation of
vaults in
historical buildings. Materials that were used for constructing arches, vaults and domes,
i.e. ceramic and stone masonry elements, are described together with their
mechanical properties. Special attention was paid to the differences between
old and modern mortars made on the base of lime. After presentation of
different vaults’ shapes there were
given the causes of vaults damages as well
as calculation analysis. Then, the problems of reparation and
reconstruction of
vaults were discussed. In conclusion there were given basic recommendations
defining rules and philosophy of ICOMOS resolutions and also those included in
Athens and Venice Cards, that should constitute the directions and instructions
for engineers and architects.
