Abstract Steel structure of the
exhibition hall of 1 ha area built in Katowice in 2000 has been described.
Dead,
technological and climatic loads have been determined together with environmental
hazards typical of the Silesia district. The results of the
structural analysis
of the load carrying structure have been quoted and the bracing system
characterized. Significant hazard to the object’s safety due to which the
object collapsed in January 2006 has been proved. The catastrophe and its
results have been presented briefly. Generalized conclusions on loads,
standardization, structural design, specialist staff qualifications, upgrading
as well as their responsibilities have been proposed.
