Over the lifetime of a
structure the
operational
conditions and the
uses often
change substantially from the design
time intended uses and initial design conditions. Through several
examples,
this
paper highlights the challenges faced with existing
structures and some of
the possible consequences of improper design approaches when change of use or
operating conditions need to be addressed. Definition of seismic hazard and
structural resistance, improved understanding of construction materials, and
change of use provide real-life examples to illustrate the issues. The paper
intentionally does not restrict the topic to buildings but rather reaches to
industrial structures as well to show the problem as a broadly spread one.
