The
purpose of this paper is a presentation of GDDKiA’s policy of safety for bridge
structures. The results of
inspections for assessing the condition of Polish
bridges, approximate frequency and possible reason for bridge collapse and
breakdown have been given. The main task of the GDDKiA’s activity is to
establish a policy which defines safety and service levels of existing bridges
designed and constructed after different codes taking into consideration
requirement for carrying increased live loads and technical condition of This
policy has not previously been presented in a written form, and the paper
attempts to describe possible determination of the really capacity of existing
bridges for traffic loads in relation to international standards.
