A linear programming problem may be defined as the problem of minimizing cost and maximizing profit as a linear function subject to linear constraints. The transportation and transshipment model is a special class of linear programming problem.
In this study the transshipment problem solved using three methods of transportation technique for basic feasible solution and two methods for finding optimal solution. Thus, the transportation and transshipment problem can always be solved using the simplex method, a well‐known but tedious technique for dealing with any linear programming problem. A special procedure for solving the transportation and transshipment problem is the so‐called “Transportation Methods”, which are involves several steps to reach the solution.
An initial basic feasible solution of the transportation and transshipment problem can be derived by three different types of transportation methods, like North West Corner Rule (NWC), The List Cost Method (LCM) and Vogel’s Approximation Method (VAM). Application of VAM to a given problem does not guarantee that every time it gives an optimal solution. However, a very good solution is invariably obtained with comparatively little effort.
The interesting part of the study is “TORA Optimization System” software to analysis the transshipment model and obtained the optimal solution using the above three methods. In this case, no optimality test method uses to find the optimal solution. TORA gives the optimal solution directly using three transportation methods.
After obtained the optimal results we will compare and analysis these result and suggest the companies that which method is the best and how will be get the better optimization.
