The monograph, translated from Russian, is a step-by-step discussion of magnetic structures and of the method of their determination from neutron diffraction data with the theory of representation of space groups based on the crystal symmetry. The book is unique as not many English books discuss the subject. Making use of the procedures developed by the authors, the experimenter can independently predict the magnetic structures based on the crystal symmetry and select thereafter the true structures by best fit of the calculated scattering pattern to the observed scattering pattern.
Chapter 1 discusses the theory of symmetry of magnetically ordered crystals. It also compares the irreducible representation with the representation based on Shubnikov groups and discusses the insufficiency of the Shubnikov group. Chapter 2 discusses symmetry analysis of magnetic structures on the basis of the theory of representations. Examples of the symmetry analysis of magnetic structures is discussed in Chapter 3. This chapter is complemented with chapter 6. Chapter 4 highlights theoretical principles of the neutron diffraction of magnetic structures followed by the discussion on the intensity of magnetic reflections in Chapter 5
