Hydrological Investigation in the Argentine Pumpa Using Satellite Imagery

Article Abstract by: Vijay Bhagat

Original Author: Dr. Wolfgang Kruck
From first decade of the last century remote sensing technique is in practice. Wibur Write started it in 1909 with the help
of Aeroplane. In the beginning, use of the technique was limited due to limited technical development, military control and lack of experts to explain the information shown on the Aerial photo or satellite image. In this background Dr. Wolfgang Kruck has noted next step in application of the satellite image (Landsat-1) and data provided by Skylab. He used the imagery and data for the analysis of the groundwater in Argentine. It was the multispectral data. In this experiment, three objectives were defined e. g. to outline the different groundwater areas with the help of parameters like depth and salinity, to prove the use of satellite image in groundwater survey and map production for the unit of land with similar geological and hydrological condition. Another objective was also been taken in force that is to test the NASA project and values of Landsat data to solve hydrological problems.
In this paper the author has explained the method of image analysis for hydrological purpose. For this, he has given a table with image indications like colour tone with applications e. g. very dark area caused by high soil moisture and sparse cultivation. He estimated less than 0.5m groundwater depth. In this direction, he has given the different meaning for different tone. However, due to similar phenology, he could not distinguish irrigated land from non-irrigated land. 'Bajo' is the Argentinean term used to explain the depressions without surface drainage. Formula to estimate the volume of fresh water in saturated sediment was also given. It is supported by the analysis of sand dunes, ancient riverbeds, tectonic pattern and hydrology in different areas. At the end of paper the author thrown light on benefits of use the data collected by using Landsat-1 and Skylab. The relevant references are given at the end. The results are visually presented by some images, sketches and photographs. The method for data analysis is more suitable and presented properly. Thus, in this exercise, it is proved that it is possible to demarcate the groundwater areas with different characteristics on satellite imageries. It records footprint in application of remote sensing in resource management.
