The Dragonriders of Pern

Book Review by: GD Short

Original Author: Anne McCaffrey
I used to think that fantasty books were for the likes of the sci-fi or slightly whimsical people (I am neither). That was
until I was introduced to the first trio of books that comprises the start of the imensely popular 'Dragonriders of Pern' series by Anne McCaffrey.
Set in the distant future on another planet called Pern, The drgonriders' series mixes an almost Medieval culture with the likes of creatures which are the stuff of dreams, and the always popular 'Save the world form complete destruction' theme (although spread out through the long series and not in a convenional way).
The characters are very easy to empathise with (Some of them getting complete novels to themselves!) and the dragon personalities are more humerous than anything else at times.
Serious critics may notice the few continuity errors that appear throughout the series but for most of, they are not apparent at all.
So popular is this series that a whole host of fanfiction groups have sprung up around it - It they can't all be wrong!
