he Magic Mountain

Book Review by: margotek79

Original Author: Thomas Mann
We invite you for two-days stay in Berghof sanatorium, led by Dr Behrens and dr Krokowski. Please, surrender yourself to
the slow rhythm of sanatorium (which is salutary in our times, full of unnecessary rush), to the changing times of the day and seasons of the year, to the atmosphere of the peculiar laziness and marasmus. Together with other sanatorium visitors for whom a month is the basic unit of time, join their life, try out their everyday routine - meals, health care and also nice changes - entertainment, but on the other hand - deep emotions, sadness and tragedies too. Meet Settembrini - an erudite, admirer of Renessaince and Enlightment, of Freedom, civilisation and progress. Meet his intellectual opponent - Naphta - Jew and Jesuite, an enthusiast of Scholastics, Medieval Ages, the prophet of the state based on terror. Meet Peepercorn - a glorifier and the king of life, drunken Bacchus. Meet seductive and mysterious Madame Chauchat, truly brave Joachim and many others. And first of all, look with favour at young Castorp who will transform into a new man in front of your eyes.
