Altogether 11 European paper companies participated in the Moderator Consulting survey, which covered issues such as
supply chain management (SCM) strategy, process and management models, reporting systems, managing customer relationships, efficient operations, people and supporting systems and future plans. The results provide a good cross-section of the industry performance and challenges. Besides being a major cost and working capital factor, SCM can also be considered a source of significant competitive edge. Some of the findings are the following: 1. Nearly half the respondents still need to develop more robust SCM strategies. 2. The outsourcing process appears to be complete. 3. Surprisingly few customers participate in the demand planning processes. 4. Future development needs to be carefully planned. The paper industry has been moving toward a more integrated and customer-centric management approach. These companies are clearly outperforming their peers and they are well positioned to increase their competitive edge by efficiently and intelligently serving their customers.
