The Poisonwood Bible

Book Review by: Sharon Jo

Original Author: Barbara Kingsolver
AT THE CROSSROADS

Kingsolver’s novel, The Poisonwood Bible portrays the Price family,
which consists of Nathan, Orleanna, Rachel, Leah, Adah and Ruth-May. The book puts forth the ideology, that contrasting personalities can co-exist within a family and adjust their lives in an unknown country. The novel shows both Leah and Adah are identical twins, raised by Nathan and Orleanna Price. Ada and Leah are poles apart in the personalities and their perspectives of life are different from each other. There is constantly a clash of conflict between them all. These two dissimilar personalities grasp the readers’ interests, by their reaction to the circumstances in Congo. They are at the crossroads of their lives and the different decision they take completely changes their lives. The novel portrays the tormoils and trials these characters undergo, in an alien country with a different culture, tradition, and values.
