novels center on the theme of men in
battle, the authors adopt entirely distinctive approaches to relaying their protagonists' stories. In Crane's
novel the reader is introduced to the
hero through a third person, in a distant
manner while in O'Brien's novel, the hero is presented in a semi-autobiographical manner.
