This paper discusses troubled mother-
daughter relationships and suggests reasons why they are so common in female coming-of-age
novels. In the process, the author compares the mother-
daughter relationship in Dorothy Allison's "Bastard Out of Carolina" with the mother-daughter
relationships in Louisa Alvarez's "How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents."
